Or if you have a week of lead time and can measure the mounting holes yourself before ordering, you can often match the specs. But in my experience, the first time you guess wrong on the dimensions, the savings vanish.

I also want to be clear: I am not saying Dorner is perfect. Their system configurator is powerful but has a learning curve; I once spent 45 minutes trying to find the right tail drive option. And their emergency shipping is expensive (circa $300-800 for overnight, as of January 2025). But when the production line is down, you are not paying for a part. You are paying for the guarantee that it will fit and work.

How to Decide: The 48-Hour Rule

If the shutdown is happening within 48 hours and the client cannot provide a 3D CAD model of the existing mounting points, just buy the Dorner. The cost of measurement errors is too high. If you have more than 48 hours and can visually inspect the site, you can often engineer a cheaper solution.
